How to Calculate Cement Bags for Any Job

Cement is the most frequently purchased material on any construction site, and getting the bag count right prevents costly delays and waste. This guide teaches you a universal method for calculating cement bags across all common construction activities—slabs, brickwork, plaster, and flooring.

The Universal Cement Bag Formula

One 50 kg bag of cement occupies 1.25 cubic feet (0.035 m³). To find the number of bags for any job: (1) calculate the total dry volume of the mix, (2) determine the cement share based on the mix ratio, and (3) divide by 1.25 cft per bag. For example, a 1:2:4 mix with 100 cft dry volume: cement volume = 100/7 = 14.3 cft, bags = 14.3/1.25 = 11.4, so buy 12 bags.

This formula works for concrete, mortar, and plaster—just adjust the ratio accordingly. For mortar (1:4 cement:sand for brickwork), total parts = 5; for plaster (1:4 or 1:6), total parts = 5 or 7. Always round up to the nearest whole bag.

Cement Bags for Common Construction Tasks

Concrete slab (1:2:4, per 100 cft wet volume): dry volume = 154 cft → cement = 154/7/1.25 = 17.6 bags → buy 18. Brickwork mortar (1:4, per 100 sq ft of 9-inch wall): mortar volume ≈ 12 cft dry → cement = 12/5/1.25 = 1.9 bags → buy 2 per 100 sq ft. Plaster (1:4, 12 mm thick, per 100 sq ft): mortar volume ≈ 2.4 cft dry → cement = 2.4/5/1.25 = 0.38 bags → buy 1 bag per 250 sq ft.

For tile fixing (1:3 mortar, 25 mm bed): per 100 sq ft, mortar volume ≈ 3.3 cft dry → cement = 3.3/4/1.25 = 0.66 bags → buy 1 bag per 150 sq ft. These quick-reference numbers help you cross-check contractor material requisitions.

Storage and Wastage Considerations

Store cement off the ground on wooden pallets in a dry, covered area. Stack no more than 10 bags high. Cement starts losing strength after 3 months of storage—use a first-in-first-out system. In humid climates, cement can harden in the bag within weeks if exposed to moisture.

Add 5% wastage for machine mixing and 8–10% for hand mixing. If cement has visible lumps that don't break apart when squeezed, it has absorbed moisture and lost strength—do not use it for structural work. Order cement in batches timed to your pour schedule rather than stockpiling the entire project's supply at once.
