Bathroom Tile Calculation Guide
Bathroom tiling is one of the most detail-intensive calculations because you're covering both walls and floors, working around multiple fixtures, and often using different tile sizes for walls vs floors. This guide walks through a complete bathroom tile calculation with real dimensions.
Calculating Floor and Wall Tile Areas
Standard bathroom floor: 7×5 ft = 35 sq ft. Wall tiling typically goes up to 7 ft (above which walls are painted). Total wall area: perimeter × tile height = 2 × (7 + 5) × 7 = 168 sq ft. Deduct the door opening (2.5 × 7 = 17.5 sq ft) and any window (2 × 2 = 4 sq ft) → net wall tile area = 146.5 sq ft.
For a master bathroom (10×8 ft with separate shower enclosure): floor = 80 sq ft, walls at 7 ft height: 2 × (10 + 8) × 7 = 252 sq ft, minus door (17.5 sq ft) and window (8 sq ft) = 226.5 sq ft. Shower enclosure walls may go full height (10 ft), adding extra area. Total tile area = floor + walls = 306.5 sq ft.
Accounting for Fixtures and Wastage
Deduct areas behind the vanity/basin (typically 3×3 ft = 9 sq ft) if you're not tiling behind it. The toilet cistern covers about 2 sq ft. A built-in bathtub panel covers 10–15 sq ft. These deductions reduce your tile order by 5–8% but add complexity because the remaining area has more cuts.
Wastage for bathroom walls is typically 8–10% because the many corners, fixtures, and pipe openings create numerous cuts. Floor wastage is lower at 5–7% since the area is small and usually rectangular. Order wall and floor tiles separately with their own wastage calculations.
Cost Estimate and Ordering Tips
At PKR 80–150/sq ft for standard ceramic tiles, a standard bathroom (181 sq ft of tile including waste) costs PKR 14,500–27,000 for tiles alone. Adhesive/mortar adds PKR 3,000–5,000. Grout adds PKR 1,000–2,000. Labor (tile fixer) costs PKR 50–80/sq ft → PKR 9,000–14,500. Total: PKR 27,500–48,500 per bathroom.
Order all tiles at once from the same batch to ensure color consistency. Keep 3–5 spare tiles for future crack repairs—matching an exact shade years later is nearly impossible. If using decorative border tiles or accent bands, calculate their running footage separately.

How many sq ft of tiles for a standard bathroom?
A standard 7×5 ft bathroom needs approximately 35 sq ft of floor tiles and 147 sq ft of wall tiles (tiled to 7 ft height), totaling about 182 sq ft. Add 8–10% wastage: approximately 200 sq ft of tiles total.
Should I tile bathroom walls to full height?
Tiling to 7 ft (door height) is standard and cost-effective. Full-height tiling (10 ft) looks premium and is easier to clean but costs 30–40% more. At minimum, tile to full height inside the shower area.
What tile size is best for bathrooms?
Wall tiles: 300×600 mm is the most popular for a clean, modern look. Floor tiles: 300×300 mm or 400×400 mm with anti-slip finish. Smaller tiles (mosaic) work well for shower floors because the extra grout lines improve slip resistance.
